Books, My Favorite Things

Below are two of my favorite science fiction books with my brief summaries of each.  I remember these two novels and have read each of them several times over.  They are absolutely great books and I would recommend Ringworld by Larry Niven to science fiction fans, while Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card is a great novel for anyone.

Ringworld

Ringworld - The Arc

Ringworld - The Arc

The novel is set in 2855. The main characters are Louis Gridley Wu (a human), Nessus (an alien with three legs, no arms and two heads, Speaker-to-Animals (another alien ferocious felinoid predator species), and Teela Brown (a young human female.) The story is a tale of the discovery of the Ringworld, their long trek exploring the Ringworld, and their eventual return back to Earth.

The “Ringworld” is an artificial ring about one million miles wide and approximately the diameter of Earth’s orbit (which makes it about 600 million miles in circumference), encircling a Sol-type star. It rotates, providing an artificial gravity that is 99.2% as strong as Earth’s gravity through the action of centrifugal force.

Ender’s Game

The Enemy's Gate Is Down

The Enemy's Gate Is Down

Ender’s Game is the story of a prodigy boy named Andrew Wiggins (also known as Ender).  His older sister couldn’t pronounce his name correctly when they were infants.  In a nutshell, the book entails Ender’s training as a military commander.  In the future, child are trained and given the command of earth’s fleet since they make better tactical leaders than an adult counterpart because they are better able to think creatively.

Ender is being rigorously rushed through the battleschool so that he can lead earth’s forces against the bugger’s homeworld.  The alien race whom twice attacked earth.

So you think you know this book? Here’s a science fiction quiz for you? When Ender Wiggins says “the enemy’s gate is down!” What does that phrase mean?

    1. It’s a battle cry to his army that the opponent is weak and now each and every one of his soldiers must charge for the enemy’s gate before time runs out.

    2. Ender states that the enemy’s gate is down, therefore the opposing army is about to flood out of their gates to charge against his soldiers.

    3. Ender wants his soldiers to look down at their feet during a battle with other armys during the simulated wars at battle school.
